Watch: O’Mahony pays tribute to former Mary I student Ashling Murphy

Munster captain Peter O’Mahony paid tribute to school teacher Ashling Murphy following their win in Castres on Friday night.

Murphy, 23, was died in Tullamore, Co Offaly, last Wednesday.

O’Mahony was speaking to Munster rugby’s own media team in France when he paid tribute to Murphy, who had graduated from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick.

The veteran back-rower spoke of a ‘sombre mood’ in the Munster camp on the night of their Champions Cup win given the tragic events.

‘We’re certainly happy with the performance — or certainly happy with the win — but look, I suppose, given everything that’s gone on at home, there’s a kind of a little bit of a sombre mood in our dressing room after what’s gone on,’ O’Mahony said.

‘We weren’t able to be a part of all the tributes and vigils for Ashling Murphy at home, the shocking act that happened. She was part of our community in Limerick having gone to Mary I.

I’m sure everyone’s thoughts are with her family and particularly on behalf of everyone in the dressing room and in Munster Rugby, our thoughts are with Ashling’s parents and family, and extended family and friends… so our thoughts are with ye.’

A man who was initially arrested in connection with the attack has been released, with Gardai stating he is no longer a suspect.

However, ‘significant progress’ in the investigation has been made with a new suspect now identified.
