Amazon has opened its eighth Fresh grocery store on Chancery Lane in Holborn, located opposite Tesco’s first GetGo autonomous store.
The ecommerce giant has ramped up grocery offerings in recent weeks, with it opening the doors of its East Sheen location only last week.
Its other Fresh stores are located in Ealing, Wembley Park, Camden, White City, Canary Wharf and Dalston, where customers can enter after scanning a QR code on their phone.
Once through the barriers, shoppers can purchase a range of competitively-priced “By Amazon” grocery products and also pick up packages ordered from the ecommerce platform from the Amazon Hub located in store.
When shoppers have finished packaging their items, all they need to do is exit the store before being charged through their Amazon accounts.
Customers will receive a receipt through their email address linked to the Amazon account they entered the store with.
Amazon’s now grocery rival Sainsbury’s is also poised to open its own cashierless supermarket in High Holborn later this month by using Amazon’s Just Walk Out (JWO) technology.
The move will make Sainsbury’s the first company based outside the US to borrow Amazon’s tech.
Sainsbury’s employees can currently shop at the SmartShop Pick & Go location, with it set to open to the public later this month.
Tesco has used Trigo to fit its autonomous store, also located in Holborn, working in the same way as JWO.
